Can I get early check-in and a better hotel room in Egypt without paying extra?

TL;DR
Early check-in depends on occupancy: one guest was asked to wait until 2 pm when the hotel was full, but was accommodated around noon. Sending room requests in advance and asking politely at reception may help; tipping upfront does not guarantee a better room.
After arriving at about 9 am when the hotel was reportedly full, the guest was initially told to wait until 2 pm. A follow-up request resulted in check-in at around noon, followed by a small thank-you tip.
To improve the chances of getting a suitable room, send requests to the hotel by email about three days before arrival. In one case there was no reply, but the requests were apparently honored and the guests received a good room without an extra payment after a late arrival.
There is no need to tip reception immediately, as it may not secure an upgrade. Guests unhappy with their room discussed it with staff and, after a small gesture of appreciation, were moved to a large family room.
