TL;DR
Water shoes are strongly recommended for snorkeling on most Egypt beaches, and at wild rocky spots you’ll usually need aqua shoes or fins. Sandy entry is easier for kids, but marine life is usually farther out near rocky bottom and coral patches.
At reef beaches, most people snorkel in water shoes because rocky, uneven entry is uncomfortable barefoot. For simple swimming near the sandy shallows it matters less, but for snorkeling they make water access much easier.
If a child is a confident swimmer, a beach with sandy entry can work, but they should be able to swim out to the reef and back without standing on the rocky bottom. Sandy areas are more comfortable, but there are usually fewer fish there.
For better snorkeling, people usually swim toward rocky bottom and coral bommies rather than staying near the sandy strip. If your goal is fish and reef, choose spots with rocky sections instead of focusing only on easy entry.
At a wild beach, water shoes or fins are basically essential because getting in near the reef is difficult without them. These spots are better for serious snorkeling than for relaxed swimming with small children near shore.
If a child enjoys snorkeling but only stays close to an adult, the easiest setup is a beach with both a sandy area for independent swimming and a separate reef swim with an adult. That is usually safer and more comfortable than spending the whole day at a rocky entry.
