Is it safe to swim near the reef in Egypt and what should you know before entering the water?

In a cleared zone with a sandy entry, a tourist observed in October 2026 that there were no surgeonfish in the shallows — they stay near the rocks. Small schooling fish, butterflyfish and blennies come into the shallows, there are sea urchins, and she saw a needlefish; but most marine life is beyond the buoy line. Her small child swam there all day without any problems.

In October 2026 a tourist wrote that she jumps in from the second pontoon, where boats moor, but climbing back up is hard. You can carefully swim along the pontoon and walk out onto the shore, but you need reef shoes for that.

According to another participant, the wild beach has security and a lifeguard from a neighbouring hotel, and yachts and speedboats periodically pass along the reefs.

At some hotels, a tourist wrote in September 2026, the sea is accessible only from a pontoon: the water is about 40 metres deep straight away, the reef is beautiful and full of fish, but the pontoon is usually crowded. For children who cannot swim well, participants suggested armbands or a life vest.

At one spot, a tourist described in July 2026, you first walk over a rocky bottom in roughly waist-deep water. Towards the end, where the drop-off begins, it is better to swim rather than walk, so you do not step on the coral.

At the Sphinx hotel, a tourist described in July 2026, there are several ways into the sea: from the beach — sand with pebbles, easier in reef shoes; from the steps on the left of the bay — sand, fine without them; from the ladder by the reef — rocks, shoes needed; from the pier — deep straight away, you cannot touch the bottom. She advises bringing reef shoes so you can use any entry.

According to a participant in July 2026, every pier has a life ring — it is worth knowing where it is before you swim.

A tourist who had swum at the reef both with scuba gear and with just a mask warned in July 2026: in this part of the sea underwater currents are fairly common and can carry you far from shore, so everyone needs to be careful.

A tourist observed in July 2026 that at the left edge of one beach, where it meets the paid beach of the El Faran hotel, stonefish and rays often lie in the sand, and there are venomous pufferfish and surgeonfish. Guests of a neighbouring hotel added that they had seen stonefish, a lionfish and a ray, and that sea urchins periodically wash off the coral into the sand.

Even if you only enter from the pontoon, swimming without a mask is risky, a tourist wrote in July 2026: you may miss coral sticking up. She recommends swimming in reef shoes or fins to protect your feet.

Supporters of reef shoes explain: even sand can hold surprises — coral fragments, small rays, shells. In summer everything is scorching, and at one hotel the paths, pontoons and even the children's paddling pool were rough and stony. Swimming from the pontoon has its risks too: a wave can push you onto the reef. Another tourist recalled stepping on a small coral shard in the sand.

About low tide, participants wrote in July 2026: the depth over the reef drops sharply and swimming over it becomes dangerous — you can badly cut yourself on coral or damage the reef with fins. Low tide exposes sharp rocks, dead coral, seaweed and silt, so special footwear is needed. Adults have almost nowhere to swim, though the shallow warm pools that form can suit small children. Another participant warned bluntly that at low tide you can land on the coral.

In June 2026 participants wrote about one reef that many people had swum there and loved it, and that divers are brought there for good reason. But in terms of safety it is not an easy spot — you need to be fully confident in the water.

From tourists' experience in June 2026, at full high tide adults swam along the shore even with a swim ring. The safest entry is from the beach by the pontoon, where the bottom is sandy.

If you enter near the pier, reef shoes are a must: the bottom there is covered with dead coral deposits and is very slippery (observed in June 2026).
