Is the Red Sea in Egypt warm enough for swimming, and how does wind affect beach conditions?

TL;DR
The water may feel warm while swimming, but strong wind and a long walk from the pier can make you cold afterwards. Piers may close in windy conditions, and a wetsuit can be useful for extended swims or diving.
Strong morning and pre-noon winds can restrict swimming, with piers sometimes closed. Even when the sea feels warm, the walk back from a distant pier can feel chilly after leaving the water.
A crosswind may carry a diesel smell out over the water, so it may not be noticeable on shore. Take a short swim without a mask first to judge how comfortable the water feels.
Even in summer, the Red Sea can feel cool during long swims or freediving. In April, a thin wetsuit may not be enough, so bringing your own wetsuit is advisable for extended sessions.
