What dangerous fish can you encounter while snorkeling in Egypt and should you be worried?

A resident surgeonfish patrols the reef steps at the entry ladder, chasing away other fish — likely because tourists regularly feed it there, making it territorial around that spot.

At the Novotel reef you may encounter a giant trevally — a very large fish that can circle around you for a long time. It looks intimidating but poses no danger and does not attack humans.

Surgeonfish won't attack if you stay out of their territory and don't touch them — they only act aggressively to defend their section of the reef.

Lionfish can be spotted near the reef in the evening — they are venomous and must not be touched. Small rays are also common. Both are safe to observe from a distance.
