TL;DR
Even sturdy reef shoes don't guarantee full protection — sharp coral spikes can pierce through them if you step hard. It depends on the coral type and how you step: carefully or abruptly.
Reef shoes help with more than coral: stingrays enter the lagoon to feed on molluscs, leaving sharp empty mussel shells and other shell fragments on the bottom.
In some bays many people walk barefoot in the central area, but near the edges where corals grow it's risky to go without shoes — safety depends heavily on the specific spot within the same bay, not just coral type.
Tourists who touch or step on corals are damaging the reef — in popular bays, coral cover is visibly declining over time due to this.
Reef shoes don't always help: if you step on coral forcefully (like jumping into the water), even the toughest spiked models can break, and sharp edges can still reach your foot.
Risk varies a lot by coral type and how you move — wading in slowly and carefully is much safer than stepping in abruptly.
