Do UV-protective mesh swim shirts prevent sunburn in Hurghada, or should you still use sunscreen underneath?

TL;DR

UV-protective mesh swim shirts can greatly reduce sunburn risk, roughly comparable to SPF 30, but they are not a complete substitute for sunscreen. Apply SPF to stretched areas such as the shoulders, especially for very fair skin.

Based on a November trip to Egypt, a UV mesh tunic effectively prevented tanning underneath. However, this type of garment may be uncomfortable in Hurghada’s hottest summer weather because it can feel too warm.

approximately SPF 30 protection

For a very fair-skinned child, the mesh tunic prevented major burning, but the shoulders reddened on day two where the fabric was stretched more tightly. Sunscreen was added to the shoulders for several days.

Even with good coverage, some tanning can still occur on exposed skin and around swimsuit edges. Darker skin may also tan slightly through the fabric, so use sunscreen on exposed and sensitive areas.
