Is snorkeling in Hurghada safe if I have breathing difficulties or cannot use a standard snorkel?

A full-face mask does not work for everyone: some people simply cannot adapt to breathing in it — the brain 'doesn't understand' how to breathe, and they have to take it off after about a minute. Such travelers end up going back to a standard mask and snorkel.

For beginners, a tip is to first practice mouth-breathing in shallow water — even while standing, just dipping the face into the water — before attempting deeper snorkeling.

One traveler experienced difficult breathing and air hunger during extended mask snorkeling, without seasickness. For a first attempt, keep the swim short and close to shore, and leave the water immediately if breathing feels uncomfortable.

Another report suggests that the main issue with a mask can be breathing discomfort during a long swim rather than motion sickness. Nausea or shortness of breath should not be treated as a normal part of snorkeling.
