TL;DR
Luxor in summer is hot but doable. A private day trip from Red Sea resorts takes about 12 hours (5am departure, back by 6pm) — exhausting but worth it.
In August, the long bus ride can be comfortable with effective air conditioning, but the sights are largely exposed to direct sun and the heat is intense. The trip was still considered worthwhile, though it was not recommended for families with children.
Some travelers visit Luxor specifically in August simply because that's when they have vacation or school holidays — the off-season heat isn't a dealbreaker for everyone.
A private day trip to Luxor from a Red Sea resort: pickup around 5am, return around 6pm, roughly 4 hours each way. Manageable with a 10-year-old child, though everyone was tired by the end. The quality of the guide makes a huge difference to the experience.
A May visit left very strong impressions — the trip was highly enjoyable despite the fatigue. A private tour is recommended over a group tour for more comfort and flexibility.
