TL;DR
Shore snorkelers near Sentido beach and pier may see turtles, eagle rays, barracuda and moray eels; dugongs are more commonly encountered in bays farther south. Morays are easier to spot near sunset, while mornings tend to have fewer boats.
On the right side of the bay, before the broken ladder, snorkellers may spot a moray eel and possibly eagle rays.
A morning swim to the right of the pier produced a turtle sighting. Just beyond the buoys opposite Sentido beach, snorkelers spotted a large eagle ray and barracuda; go early before several yachts arrive.
The reef by the pier may look grey, but it has plenty of colourful fish. There are only a few loungers on the pier, and life jackets are available but optional; a yellow flag can still coincide with stronger wind.
Look for a peppered moray close to shore on the right-hand side of the pier. It comes out to hunt near sunset and can be spotted from the water-entry steps.
Swimming right along the shore can take you almost to the Grand boat pier. It is an option for a longer coastal snorkel, but watch for boat activity near the pier.
Dugong trips usually go to a neighbouring bay south of Marsa Alam. Sightings are also possible on dives, but encounters can be brief—sometimes only around a minute.
