TL;DR
Wading into the water barefoot from the shore isn't recommended due to coral and currents; it's safer at high tide, and currents near piers can be very strong.
Currents in the Red Sea, especially around Sharm, are noticeable but not constant — even kids swim there. If you're worried, bring a board or pool noodle and hang a whistle on a string so lifeguards can help if needed.
Entering the water from the shore is safer only during high tide — at other times sharp rocks and coral make it easy to get hurt barefoot.
Currents near the pier can be very strong, making it risky to swim there; calm conditions are rare.
Some bays in Sharm look less calm than open sea or lagoons — for comparison, the lagoon in Dahab appears visually safer.
Wading in barefoot from the shore in Sharm isn't recommended; instead it's better to visit Farsha or the Tiran area for swimming.
