TL;DR
Pickalbatros Royal Moderna is family-friendly: good food with seafood and grilled meat, swimming from the pier until 18:30, and a shallow lagoon nearby for small children. Red flag often flies at the pier in the morning — use the adjacent lagoon instead.
For quieter snorkeling, guests recommend going to the sea early, around 8:00–8:20: there are few people and plenty of fish. Visitors also reported occasional turtle sightings in the morning and said rays are fairly common.
Additional detail on the Ras Mohammed yacht trip: en route the boat makes two stops for snorkeling and diving, the whole day is spent at sea, a tasty seafood lunch is served on board, and there's a slide for getting into the water from the yacht.
Another food review: guests noted quail was served, and the pastries/desserts were especially praised — the family was delighted with the hotel's cuisine.
Tides are mainly noticeable along the shore: guests observed low tide around 11:00 and the water returning at about 16:00. At low tide, children can look for crabs, starfish and sea urchins; swimming from the pier is unaffected by the tide level.
One food tip: meat at the main buffet can sometimes be dry, although the overall selection is broad. Guests recommend the Italian restaurant for beef and veal, while the Egyptian restaurant is particularly praised for its lamb.
There tend to be especially many fish from the pier in the afternoon. In addition to regular reef fish, guests saw two rays and a turtle near the hotel, making late-day snorkeling particularly rewarding for families.
For children, guests recommend the newer beach area as the better family option, but they advise bringing coral shoes for entering the water.
For older kids, the usual mix of aquapark, pools, and the sea seems enough; in July, guests also reported spotting a lionfish near the shore/reef.
The near-shore snorkeling is not limited to small fish: guests reported seeing a ray, moray eel, octopus, squid, and even a sea eel right off the beach while swimming with a child. For families, this means interesting marine life can be seen without long swims.
The hotel's water park is good for kids — not huge but solid. The aqua park zone is large with plenty of sunbeds available near the pools. Children's entertainment runs until 23:00. The beach is rated better than at neighbouring Albatros hotels — gentle entry, corals, plenty of fish near shore and from the pier. It's about a 7-minute walk via Sea Life.
At low tide, small pools left in coral hollows near the shore are great for spotting fish and other sea creatures not visible at high tide. Both kids and adults can catch tiny crabs by hand — they scuttle across your palm.
In the mornings the main pier often flies a red flag (no swimming). Head to the lagoon to the left — sandy bottom, waist-deep water, and plenty of fish near shore. Families with small children gather there. The next pier also has its own lagoon.
Swimming from the hotel pier is allowed until 18:30. In the evenings, large moray eels and octopuses appear near the pier — guests spotted two large morays right by the hotel, and a group even swam out to open water with a lifeguard to follow them.
The food at the hotel gets high marks: red fish, shrimp, and langoustines are served every other day, grilled beef and other meats are available daily, and there is a wide selection of fruit. Families with children are consistently satisfied with the dining.
Yacht trips to Ras Mohammed work well even with infants: there are shaded spots on board where babies can sleep. Parents take turns snorkeling or diving while the other stays with the child. Infants are common on these excursions.
