TL;DR
Fanara Reef is reported to have rays, Napoleon wrasse, lionfish and abundant colourful reef fish, with larger sightings often occurring near the jetty during daytime. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the Fanara Pier area is worth checking, especially in the afternoon.
Two large marlin were seen circling swimmers near Fanara Pier at around 2–3 pm. This is an unusual sighting, but an afternoon snorkel by the jetty can bring encounters with larger fish.
Reports from the reef mention two rays that regularly stay there overnight and two Napoleon wrasse that pass through from time to time. Three lionfish, including a striking purple-pink one, plus plenty of small colourful fish were also seen.
A very large ray approached the reef during the day. If rays are your priority, do not limit snorkelling to early morning—try a daytime swim as well.
On an evening visit, two large marine animals were seen gliding over the reef right beside the jetty. It is worth watching from the pier too, as they were visible directly below visitors’ feet.
