TL;DR
Kakheti is closer with a much better road and more polished infrastructure (stay overnight in Sighnaghi); Svaneti offers mountain scenery but has a winding, harder road, higher prices, and needs at least 2-3 days.
Svaneti means mountains, ancient towers, and the Enguri river — a completely different vibe from the coast. The road is winding but safe in summer with basic mountain-driving skills. Plan for at least 2-3 days.
Travel time to either region is roughly similar, but the road to Kakheti is much better quality. Recommended to stay overnight in Sighnaghi — it's tidy, scenic, and well set up for visitors.
Kakheti (Telavi, Sighnaghi area) is strong on food and wine — lots of meat dishes and vineyards, unlike coastal Adjara. Svaneti, by contrast, feels remote and sparsely populated, with high prices across the board.
If you'd rather skip the long, pricey trip, a simple alternative is camping along the coast starting around Shekvetili and heading further south — fewer pushy tourist-oriented vendors and more chances to meet locals.
