What is the dress code for tourists in Batumi (especially for visiting churches and monasteries)?

In July 2026 a participant replied to a tourist worried by rumors that shorts and above-the-knee dresses are frowned upon in Batumi. In her words, you will not be admitted to a monastery in shorts, and going to churches in shorts or with a bare midriff is not recommended. When visiting monasteries and churches, bring longer clothing with you.

In town the expectations are more relaxed. According to a local resident in July 2026, Georgian men wear shorts only at the beach, while women wear shorts around town as well. Visitors dress however they like, so shorts and short dresses on Batumi streets are common.

There is still a limit: the same resident heard locals a couple of times make remarks to visitors who were dressed very revealingly. It is not a ban or a fine, just how people around you react, but very revealing outfits away from the beach can cause disapproval.
