TL;DR
There's no true direct Tbilisi–Moscow bus (large buses pass through Vladikavkaz and Mineralnye Vody transit points but don't stop or sell tickets there); train tickets sell out fast, so travelers often book a private transfer or fly via a connecting country instead.
Train tickets can be sold out for the dates you need, and regular scheduled buses stop in every town along the route — too slow, so a direct private transfer is a better option.
A connecting flight within Russia can mean an unexpected multi-hour layover in another city (one traveler was rerouted through Nizhnevartovsk for 6 hours on a Vladivostok–Moscow flight) — choose a direct flight when possible.
Large long-haul buses heading to Moscow do pass through Vladikavkaz and Mineralnye Vody, but they don't stop there for passengers — you can't buy a ticket for just that leg of the journey.
