TL;DR
For a first visit to Delhi, mix major monuments from different periods: Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. Allow at least half a day for Akshardham, while Lodhi Garden or Sunder Nursery are good green escapes.
For a Mughal-history itinerary, combine Humayun’s Tomb, the Red Fort and Jama Masjid. Chandni Chowk is close to Jama Masjid and adds a walk through the busy, atmospheric lanes of Old Delhi.
Set aside a separate part of the day for Qutub Minar, Delhi’s landmark brick minaret and one of the city’s most recognizable historic sites.
Plan at least half a day for the Akshardham complex rather than treating it as a quick stop between sights. It works well as the main activity for an afternoon.
For a calmer break after monument-hopping, choose Lodhi Garden or Sunder Nursery, both green heritage spaces. India Gate and the Sikh temple Gurudwara Bangla Sahib are additional worthwhile stops.
