Is Agra worth visiting just for the Taj Mahal, or are there other sights?

TL;DR
If seeing the Taj Mahal is your only goal, you could skip it, but most first-time visitors find it worth experiencing in person. Agra also has the impressive Agra Fort and, time permitting, Fatehpur Sikri nearby.
For a first trip to India, don't cross Agra off your itinerary — many travelers love the Taj Mahal, and you can only form your own opinion by seeing it in person. Besides the Taj, Agra has an impressive Fort, and if you have time, Fatehpur Sikri is worth a detour.
If the Taj Mahal is literally the only thing you're interested in, you could skip this leg of the trip entirely.
One traveler noted a stark contrast: the Taj Mahal itself is beautiful, but the surrounding area in Agra is dirty and has an unpleasant smell — they felt some of the tourist revenue should go toward cleaning up the city.
