TL;DR
March to May is the sweet spot — before peak season, calm seas. For cleaner, calmer water, the Gili Islands are a better alternative to Bali's beaches.
For calmer swimming in Nusa Dua, consider the lagoons by Ayodya, Merusaka, and Grand Hyatt hotels. Waves there are usually small, making them suitable for a relaxed beach holiday.
Geger Beach, just south of Nusa Dua, is another swimming option in this part of Bali.
Bali’s west coast, including the Kuta area, is generally not ideal for calm swimming because waves are common there. The island’s north is suggested for quieter water.
From Kuta, Jimbaran is an option for noticeably calmer water, while Nusa Dua is usually calmer still. A taxi ride to Nusa Dua takes about 30 minutes including traffic.
One traveler shared that although Melasti Beach has waves, swimming there was generally fine and even more fun with the waves. Kids swam there without issues too.
March through May is the best window for beach swimming in Bali — it's pre-peak season with calmer seas. From July onward it's high season, which suits surfers more than swimmers.
For a proper beach holiday with clear, calm water, the Gili Islands near Lombok are worth considering — the sea there is noticeably better than most Bali beaches.
Melasti Beach is popular with wave and surf enthusiasts. Travelers staying near it in July typically go for the waves, not calm swimming conditions.
