TL;DR
A same-day trip is possible if time is limited, with a fast boat taking about 1.5 hours each way. Reported times are around 09:00 from Bali and the last return boat from Gili at about 16:00, but confirm with the operator as departures can be earlier.
If your Bali itinerary is short, a one-day visit to Gili Trawangan can still be worthwhile for a swim and a brief walk around the island rather than skipping the Gilis altogether.
For Bali to Gili Trawangan, the first fast boat is reported to leave at around 09:00. The crossing takes roughly 1.5 hours each way, but arrive early because the boat may depart up to 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
The reported last fast boat from the Gilis back to Bali leaves by about 16:00. That leaves only a few hours on the island, so for a relaxed stay some travelers recommend at least 3 nights, ideally around 5.
If you stay overnight in the Gili Islands, consider Gili Air as an alternative to Gili Trawangan. One traveler’s experience suggests that about half a day is enough to walk around Gili Meno.
