For a trip to Sekumpul, especially in rain and on mountain roads, a car is recommended: it is much more comfortable than a scooter and reportedly inexpensive. It is also convenient if you plan to include Kintamani en route.

Hired a car with driver for the day from Nusa Dua — very convenient when the itinerary included multiple stops: safari, Beachwalk mall, and sunset at the Double Six rooftop bar in Seminyak. A full-day driver is the better choice for multi-stop trips.

Made it to Sekumpul on two Honda Vario scooters — one each. The road is genuinely challenging with very steep climbs and descents, but two complete beginners managed it fine, so it's doable.

The drive from Kuta to Sekumpul in the north with a full-day driver was surprisingly relaxed — comfortable ride with beautiful scenery and the freedom to stop wherever you like along the way.
