Is it safe to self-drive to North Bali waterfalls or Mount Batur, and how difficult are the roads?

The road from Ubud to Kintamani itself is easy — light traffic, a gentle climb, cool weather. But the descent down to Lake Batur is a serpentine road, and on weekends it gets very congested with cars and bikes, making the descent and the climb back up exhausting.

If you arrive in the evening, road lighting is poor and many local cars have tinted windows, which noticeably reduces visibility on narrow stretches. Experienced drivers can manage it, but it may feel uncomfortable for beginners.

In some spots the roads are so narrow that for two cars to pass, one has to stop and pull over onto the shoulder. Potholes on certain sections are deep enough that even phone video stabilization can't smooth out the bumps.

Walking is often inconvenient in Bali because sidewalks are limited and traffic stays very close to pedestrians. Cross-island drives can be slow: a car trip from North Bali to Uluwatu feels very long, and heavy traffic is one reason some travelers postpone going to Mount Batur.

Roads to popular North Bali waterfalls are not usually considered extreme, but they are classic Bali mountain roads: narrow lanes, a few long climbs and descents, and some sharp bends. Confident drivers generally find it manageable, while beginners on a scooter or car may feel uneasy.

Some access roads near waterfalls include rough dirt sections with potholes and very steep gradients, so the ride can be bumpy and loud. The return may continue on paved mountain switchbacks, but after dark it feels much more stressful, especially if you are traveling alone.
