Should I stay in Male city or on a local island in the Maldives?

Local islands beat Male: they have proper bikini beaches, a real vacation vibe, and richer excursions, plus hotels are often cheaper. Male itself is not really suitable for a stay — at most Hulhumale near the airport works for a couple of days.

Local islands generally offer a much richer excursion program than Male. They're also the only place with proper bikini beaches, palm trees, and a genuine tourist vibe.

Near the airport, Hulhumale island can work for a few days if you need to stay close to the terminal, but Male city itself is not suitable for a beach holiday at all.
