TL;DR
Basic overnight accommodation in Sri Lanka can start at about US$9–15: a non-air-conditioned room in Unawatuna was reported at LKR 3,000, while a modest riverside guesthouse in Bentota cost US$15. Full-scale resort-style hotels are relatively limited, so do not expect the same level of hotel infrastructure as major package-tour destinations.
Do not expect a wide choice of large, full-service resorts: hotels comparable to those in major package-tour destinations are relatively uncommon in Sri Lanka.
In Bentota, a basic, somewhat worn but adequately equipped riverside guesthouse room was available for around US$15.
In Unawatuna, a room without air conditioning was reported at LKR 3,000, roughly US$9. It is a practical option if you mainly need a place to sleep rather than spend time at the hotel.
