What is the best time to visit Hikkaduwa for sunny weather and fewer rainy days?

A report dated 17 September 2026 placed the previous year’s peak rainfall between mid-October and the end of November.

Another traveller reported good weather during a 14-day stay beginning on 28 September 2025, with rain only once throughout the trip.

A report dated 27 September 2026 said that the weather starts shifting away from high-season conditions around mid-April, near Sri Lankan New Year.

A report dated 12 October 2026 described typical October conditions as sunny during the day, with rain in the evening or at night. The same report said the ocean was rough but swimming was still possible.

March is generally considered high season in Hikkaduwa, making it one of the more reliable months for a sunny beach trip.

May and October are shoulder-season months, when conditions can change quickly and overcast skies are more common.

By late October, the chances of better weather in Hikkaduwa are usually higher than earlier in the month, although sunshine is still not guaranteed.

On Sri Lanka’s southwest coast, rain is more often short-lived rather than continuous for several days; prolonged downpours are uncommon even in October.

Do not choose dates based on the month alone: frequent rain can occur even in usually dry February, and January has also been unpredictable in recent years.
