Which hotel to choose in Hikkaduwa and what to expect from accommodation there (Red Lobster, Coral Sands)?

TL;DR
In Hikkaduwa, opt for 4-star hotels like Red Lobster (Premier Suite with ocean view, breakfast 7:30–9:30, friendly staff) rather than cheap 3-star options in Unawatuna; currency exchange rates run about 331–332 per dollar.
Red Lobster rooms have a fridge, air conditioning, and a ceiling fan. There's no safe, so guests suggest hiding valuables well in the room or leaving them at reception.
Near the hotel: the first liquor store is right across the road, the second about 200 meters away. There's also a fruit market roughly a 5-minute walk away.
The tuk-tuk driver attached to the hotel may refuse longer trips (like to Galle), pushing the lagoon or turtle farm instead. An Uber to Galle costs about 2300–2800 rupees (drivers rarely give change), while local tuk-tuk drivers at the Fort gate can end up charging much more — in one case tourists paid 4000 rupees total for a Fort tour and the return trip.
A traveler originally planned Unawatuna but switched after reading bad reviews about its 3-star hotels. They chose Hikkaduwa instead, skipping the 5-star Araliya as too expensive and poorly located.
The neighboring Coral hotel is larger and always crowded, with a beachfront cafe and boat rentals for surfing/snorkeling. Meals there are pricier and the menu has no photos or translation, which is inconvenient.
At Red Lobster hotel, the Premier Suite with ocean view includes a hairdryer on request, regularly refilled tea/coffee/sugar/cream, and bar soap plus shower gel, but no safe. Breakfast runs 7:30–9:30am, with limited food left by 8am.
Near the hotel there are currency exchange points (bank rate 331, jewelry shops 332, old dollar bills accepted at 330), two liquor stores, an affordable bakery, and a barber shop.
Red Lobster's menu is duplicated in Russian, more convenient than Coral's untranslated menu. A tuk-tuk driver is assigned to the hotel and can be quite persistent.
