TL;DR
For better beach conditions in late September and early October, travelers commonly recommend Sri Lanka’s east and northeast coast, especially Arugam Bay, Pasikuda and Trincomalee. Hikkaduwa is on the southwest coast, where rain and rougher seas can occur at this time.
For an early-autumn beach trip, Arugam Bay on the east coast is recommended because conditions are generally more favorable than on the southwest coast around Hikkaduwa.
Pasikuda is another suggested option for late September to early October, as the east coast is typically a better bet for beach weather during this period.
Trincomalee on Sri Lanka’s northeast coast is also recommended for this season. Consider it instead of Hikkaduwa if lower rainfall and calmer beach conditions are the priority.
The north-central cultural area, plus the less-touristed north and northwest, are also considered suitable at this time. They can be added to an east-coast beach itinerary.
