TL;DR
November and August are good windows to visit Unawatuna — calm ocean, daily swimming, fewer crowds, and rain (if any) mostly falls at night and dries quickly.
Recent experience suggests that rain more often arrived toward nighttime while daytime weather was good. Swimming conditions varied between beaches, with noticeably different wave levels from one beach to another.
First-time visit with no strict expectations — just relaxing by the ocean with a change of scenery, short day-trip excursions nearby, and a memorable New Year's atmosphere.
Spent three weeks last August: swam every day, rain mostly fell at night with occasional daytime showers that dried quickly. Crowds were light — liked it enough to return for another month.
Last year's trip ran November 19–26: excellent weather, calm ocean, swimming suitable for both adults and kids, plenty of open cafes, and light crowds. A cyclone with flooding hit the very day they left — so weather timing can be unpredictable.
