Is Antalya city beach worth it or should I go elsewhere?

Based on 1 discussion with 3 participants · Last activity: 9 days ago

TL;DR

Antalya's city beach is tiny (~30m), crowded, and not very clean. It works if you're staying nearby and just need a quick swim, but for a proper beach experience head elsewhere or take a boat.

One visitor clarifies that the entry is only 'gradual' relatively speaking: an adult reaches neck-deep water after just 4-5 steps. Compared to the fully rocky stretches of Antalya's city coast, where depth starts immediately at several meters, this beach can be called more gradual by comparison. However, the water in this area is described as very murky and dirty.

Another report states the beach isn't shallow — entry involves a quick depth increase. Waves can occur in strong wind since the coastline is open, but according to the author, this same openness is what keeps the sea clean here.

Water clarity near shore depends on wind direction: offshore wind brings low tide and calm, clear conditions; onshore wind makes the water murkier right at the shore, clearing up after wading 3-5 metres out; the bottom is mostly sandy with occasional smooth, non-sharp stones. Due to a nearby boat station, there's a noticeable fuel smell and oily sheens on the water surface from boats.

One visitor reports that besides the stone slabs and boulders at the water entry, there are also some kind of underwater poles/posts — an additional obstacle when entering the sea.

After a storm there was some seaweed on the shore and a steep sea entry (sandy beach). Sunbeds are not an issue: at the pool you need to reserve them early morning, but on the beach free sunbeds are available whenever you arrive.

A recent strong storm washed a large amount of stones (from big rocks to small pebbles) onto the shore and into the water, creating a 0.5-1 m obstacle both on land and underwater at the sea entry point.

There is one recent positive note about Konyaaltı: the beach is reported to have Blue Flag status. People also say there usually are no clusters of yachts nearby; the sea often gets choppier in the second half of the day, and after storms branches or small debris may temporarily wash ashore, but this is described as a short-lived natural effect.

Excavation work in the nearby river has made the sea water murky, forcing swimmers to use other beaches. Before the works started, conditions were fine.

The sea entry is awkward: a strip of pebbles, then a sandy patch with breaking waves, followed by an uneven slope underwater where you can slide from sand onto rocks. Many people wade in only to knee depth before diving in to avoid walking on the pebbly bottom.

The water is clear throughout. Snorkelling is rewarding — plenty of fish, especially around the pier.

9 days ago Snorkelling near the pier — lots of fish

The sea entry is pebbly and the bottom disappears within 2–3 metres. There is floating debris near the shore but the water is clean further out. A pier with a ladder is available for diving. Water shoes are strongly recommended — the pebbles are painful without them.

A strip of large rocks between the sun loungers and the water makes getting in and out of the sea awkward, especially for adults — children seem to manage it more easily.

Konyaaltı beach has a pebbly bottom, though children still swim there. The entry is very gradual — depth only begins near the far buoys. Morning waves stir up the sandy bottom, making the water murky and dirty.

The beach is currently undergoing active renovation. If your accommodation is nearby and you just need a quick dip, it's acceptable for that purpose.

The beach strip is only about 30 meters wide and constantly packed with people. It's worth the effort to travel to a better beach.

The area is somewhat dirty and cramped. To find decent water quality, you'll need to take a boat or water transport to reach better spots.
