What to do if your HGS toll tag does not work on Turkish toll roads with a zero balance

Even when HGS is associated with the vehicle registration, the system may occasionally fail to recognise both the plate and the windshield tag. At a toll point with a cashier, cash payment can be used instead.

To avoid a zero balance, HGS can be linked to a credit card. This should prevent the account from running out of funds, although occasional tag or licence-plate reading failures can still happen.

If a toll-booth employee says the HGS balance is zero and the barrier stays closed, do not assume the trip will automatically be recorded as an unpaid toll: you may be asked to pay cash on the spot.
