How many days do you need in Istanbul for a first visit?

TL;DR

3 full days are enough to get a taste of the city's atmosphere, but if you want to walk around at a relaxed pace without rushing, plan for at least 5 days.

What the community said

If your health allows a lot of walking, 5 days is enough to cover the main mosques, parks, squares, Istiklal Street, the Galata Tower (exterior), a ferry trip to the Princes' Islands, Galataport, and the waterfront streets of Kadıköy — all for free and without queues.

A solid minimum is 3 full days: Day 1 — walk around Sultanahmet without paying to enter sites (one free mosque is enough for a taste), plus the Galata Tower and bridge, with parks and sweets for kids; Day 2 — a Bosphorus boat trip and eating right by the water (not just viewing it from a restaurant), kids love the boats; Day 3 — shopping and dinner at a quality mall like Zorlu or Kanyon, which has kids' stores (Lego etc.), not just a food court.

Another traveler agreed: if you can't stay longer, 3 days is a great option and definitely better than not going at all.
