How to get from central Istanbul to Istanbul Airport (IST) by public transport?

When planning a public-transport trip to the airport, allow enough travel time to arrive at Istanbul Airport at least 2 hours before your flight departure.

The Metrobüs is distinct from a regular bus or the metro: it runs mostly on a dedicated lane from Beylikdüzü to Söğütlüçeşme (connecting the European and Asian sides), has its own separate stops, and is less affected by traffic — though Google Maps sometimes displays it as a regular bus.

Buy an Istanbulkart yourself from an official vending machine; the interface usually includes Russian. Do not hand cash or your bank card to unsolicited helpers near the machines.

Alternative route from the Balat area to the airport: take tram T5 from Balat station to its terminus Alibeyköy Metro, then switch to metro line M7 for one stop to Kağıthane, then take the high-speed M11 line directly to Istanbul Airport station. Alternatively, a Havaist bus can be caught by walking or taking tram T5 to the intermediate stop Ayvansaray.

From the Asian side (e.g. Ayrılık Çeşmesi on metro M4) you have two options: fast — transfer to Marmaray to Sirkeci; scenic — go to Kadıköy and take a ferry to Eminönü.
