Is it cheaper to book a hotel in Istanbul directly instead of through Booking.com or other platforms?

TL;DR
Front desk prices usually match Booking.com or other platforms — hotels avoid undercutting their own aggregator deals. However, some small hotels offer a 5-7% discount for cash payment (e.g. 70€ instead of 75€ per night).
Asking directly at the front desk, the price matched the hotel's own website. Comparing with a booking platform showed only a negligible difference — hotels seem reluctant to sell direct and bypass aggregators.
By partnering with a platform like Booking.com, a hotel essentially pays for advertising and reviews — for small hotels this is more effective than attracting guests on their own, so direct booking rates are rarely lower.
Small hotels sometimes offer a discount for paying cash on arrival: for example, 70 euros per night in cash versus 75 euros for a card/bank prepayment.
Due to a general climate of distrust, even prepaying directly through a hotel's website doesn't guarantee fair treatment — refunds can be delayed if you cancel. Until things stabilize, relying on a hotel's star rating and reputation is safer than chasing the lowest price.
