Istanbul tours and excursions: is it cheaper to book through your hotel guide or a local travel agency?

Based on 2 discussions with 3 participants · Last activity: 2 days ago

TL;DR

Local travel agents are often much cheaper than hotel-organized tours with the same quality — e.g. diving trips run about €25 locally vs €60 through hotels. Skip the waterpark beach on Heybeliada island — overpriced, crowded, and murky water.

The sandy beach next to the waterpark on Heybeliada island isn't worth it: expensive entry, very crowded, and the water is murky with seaweed in places despite looking nice in photos.

Local guides almost always beat hotel prices for the same tour conditions (transport, meals, number of dives/duration). For example, a diving trip through a local guide costs around €25 vs about €60 through the hotel. Exception: attractions with a fixed expensive entry fee (aquarium, theme park, cable car) — prices there are similar no matter who books it.

A waterpark trip will cost full price with no discounts — if you're not particularly into waterparks, it's worth looking for more budget-friendly excursion options instead.
