Top sights and attractions to visit in Istanbul

A route tip from September 2026: set Google Maps or a similar app to the Blue Mosque — Hagia Sophia, Topkapi, the Basilica Cistern, Gülhane Park, the Grand Bazaar and Süleymaniye are nearby. A little further, by tram, are the Bayezid Mosque, Sarayburnu point, the New Mosque, Galataport, Taksim and İstiklal. According to the participant, map apps plan these routes easily.

Caveats from August 2026, from a participant suggesting a route: Hagia Sophia was under restoration at the time, Galata Tower is not worth the effort in their view, and Topkapi is worth visiting mainly if you are a fan of the TV series 'Magnificent Century'. Dolmabahçe is very beautiful but expensive; as an alternative they suggested Beylerbeyi Palace, which has similarly beautiful gates and access to the Bosphorus waterfront.

Panoramic views recommended in August 2026: the Haliç (Golden Horn) Bridge, Pierre Loti Hill and Nakkaştepe Park. Another participant in late August listed viewpoints: the Süleymaniye Mosque, Pierre Loti Hill, the municipal Zeyrek café, the paid Yedikule Fortress and the paid Tekfur Palace museum.

The Üsküdar pier offers a very beautiful view. From there you can take a ferry towards Beykoz: on the way you pass under the bridge and see the mansions along the Bosphorus shore (August 2026 tip).

Ortaköy with its mosque was suggested as an extra stop if you have time (August 2026); the Ortaköy Mosque also appeared on a late-August list.

The Archaeological Museum, according to an August 2026 tip, is inexpensive and very interesting; it is close to Gülhane Park. Walk to the end of Gülhane's main avenue and you reach the pretty Sarayburnu pier — other participants also mentioned Sarayburnu point.

For technology fans, the Rahmi M. Koç Museum was recommended in August 2026 — interesting, but allow plenty of time for it.

On the Asian side, a participant also recommended the Moda area (Suadiye metro station): in their words it has good shopping and is a great neighbourhood to stroll (August 2026).

If you do not mind spending a bit, a participant suggested a ride on a double-decker sightseeing bus — they depart from Sultanahmet Square (August 2026).

Almost everyone recommends the Süleymaniye Mosque — it was on the general list in June and named first in August. Nearby are the Balat district and the Chora monastery (Kariye Mosque): according to a June 2026 tip, from Chora you walk downhill into Balat, so it makes sense to start at Chora and finish in Balat.

On the Asian side, a June 2026 list included Çamlıca Mosque, Beylerbeyi Palace, the Kuzguncuk neighbourhood, Nakkaştepe Park and Anadolu Kavağı. In August Çamlıca was again named among the must-see mosques and Nakkaştepe Park among the best panoramic viewpoints.

The main historical sights are concentrated in and around Sultanahmet: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque), Topkapi Palace, the Basilica Cistern, Gülhane Park, plus the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar. Participants listed this set in June, August and September 2026. In September one noted that most of these places are indoors, and that tourist and historical sights are generally concentrated in the Fatih and Sultanahmet districts.

Beyoğlu covers İstiklal Avenue with the Church of St. Anthony, Taksim Square, Galata Bridge and Galata Tower; Dolmabahçe Palace appears on the same lists. In late August and September 2026 participants added Galataport: one suggested route takes the tram from Sultanahmet to Galataport, then on to Taksim and İstiklal.

A Bosphorus cruise and the Princes' Islands appeared on the June and August 2026 lists as must-dos, alongside the main mosques and bazaars.
