Where should families stay in Istanbul for easy public transport, waterfront play areas and access to the Old City?

TL;DR

Stay near Vezneciler Metro to walk to Istanbul’s main historic sights, or choose Bakırköy/Yenimahalle by Marmaray for malls and waterfront playgrounds. In Dolapdere, Kurtuluş and Bomonti, check the terrain carefully: routes to the metro can be steep and the streetscape varies considerably.

What the community said

Accommodation around Dolapdere, Kurtuluş and Bomonti can be convenient for Bomontiada and Kurtuluş Street, with cafés, bakeries, bars and restaurants. However, walking from the lower streets to Osmanbey Metro or Taksim involves steep uphill sections, which are difficult with luggage or a stroller. Parts of Dolapdere near the former industrial area can also be noisy, dusty and close to workshops or construction.

For a family stay, consider Bakırköy or Yenimahalle near a Marmaray station. The area has shopping centres and waterfront playgrounds, while the historic centre is about five Marmaray stops away.

For walking access to the main sights, look for accommodation near Vezneciler Metro. Süleymaniye Mosque and its Bosphorus viewpoint are roughly a five-minute walk away, and the airport can be reached with one transfer. Havaist bus stops are not especially close, though.
