Where to exchange money to Turkish lira in Istanbul — airport or city?

On 8 October 2026, a discussion participant described 47–49 Turkish lira per US dollar as a favorable rate and reported that the choice of exchange office at Istanbul’s new airport made no difference. Rules change — confirm with an official source before you travel.

You do not necessarily need to go to the Grand Bazaar for a better rate: one regular exchange office quoted 48.5, versus 48.6 near the bazaar. Compare a few exchange offices rather than changing money at the first one you see.

Older US$100 notes issued before 2009 may be difficult to exchange in Istanbul. Try an airport exchange office first; if they refuse them, you may need to try several exchange offices or use the notes for purchases at bazaars and shops.

You don't need to exchange your whole amount at the airport: change a small sum there (e.g. $30) to cover immediate needs, then exchange the rest in the city as required — the airport rate is decent but not the best.

At Istanbul Airport duty-free shops, prices may be displayed in euros, and purchases can be paid for in euros, US dollars, or Turkish lira. There is no need to exchange all your cash into lira immediately on arrival; leftover lira can be spent there.

Arriving in Istanbul with only USD is fine — airport exchange offices let you get lira right away. It also helps to book a hotel near public transport stops to avoid relying on taxis.
