TL;DR
Maldivian Rufiyaa is nearly impossible to exchange in Dubai — it's a non-convertible exotic currency. Avoid taking it off the islands.
A Dubai resident warns: don't take Maldivian Rufiyaa out of the Maldives expecting to exchange them in the UAE. This currency is not traded outside the country and essentially becomes worthless.
Travelers transiting through Dubai from the Maldives were unable to exchange Rufiyaa back to USD or AED. The Bank of Maldives at Malé airport refused reverse exchange and directed customers to city branches — not helpful when already departing.
Practical tip: if you have leftover Rufiyaa in the Maldives, exchange them back at city bank branches before heading to the airport. It cannot be done at Malé airport or in Dubai.
