Do hotels in the UAE charge a security deposit at check-in?

In August 2026 a traveler asked at one hotel why the deposit had doubled. Staff explained that a guest had recently failed to vacate the room on time and then quietly left without paying for the extra night — after that the hotel raised the deposit. This is one hotel's explanation, but it shows that deposit amounts can change.

More reports of check-in without a deposit: in late June 2026 a family staying 3 nights was never asked for one; in September 2026 a family of two adults and a child checking in on 17 September was not charged a deposit either. One traveler recalled that last November the Marina Millennium 4* hotel took no deposit from her at all — which is why a deposit on her next trip came as a surprise.

At a 4-star Hilton property, guests in June 2026 paid no deposit, but the minibar contents were removed from the room.

In June 2026 travelers reported that their hotel treated the deposit as optional: reception asked directly whether they wanted to leave one, and after they said no, they were checked in without it. In July another traveler wrote that her hotel did have a deposit, but she simply said she did not want to pay it and was not charged.

In June 2026 travelers who paid 1,600 AED for an early check-in at 3 am did not leave any deposit at all — the receptionist did not even mention it. The travelers themselves assumed the deposit was waived because of that early check-in payment.
