Can you leave Vietnam with an overstay by land border, or do you have to pay the overstay fine at the airport?

Recent reports say that for a short overstay, airport departure can sometimes be resolved by paying a fine before check-in or passport control. It is not guaranteed though: if the airport officers do not clear it on the spot, they may send you to the immigration office, which can make you miss your flight.

Land borders are reported to be much stricter with overstays: if your stay has expired, they usually do not let you cross. Even with just a 1-day overstay, flying out is considered safer than trying a bus-based border run.

If you are flying and not leaving the city or airport area, travelers still noted that the arrival card normally has to be filled out. In other words, it may be required even if you are only in transit and not entering the city.

One practical tip was to arrange the necessary entry paperwork before arrival, especially if Hanoi is your first entry point. In short, do not count on fixing document issues after landing if they can be handled in advance.

Travelers specifically pointed out that the softer 'pay on the spot' scenario does not apply at land checkpoints. If the border officers refuse to process your exit there, you also cannot simply continue by bus through that crossing.

If you have already overstayed, the most realistic option mentioned was to depart by air rather than visit immigration hoping for a 1-day extension just to do a land border run. Reports described the chance of getting such an extension as extremely low.

The amounts mentioned were vague, but travelers reported overstay payments starting from about 1,000,000 VND and going higher depending on how the case is handled. That is why the safest advice is not to exceed your permitted stay even by one day if you want to avoid extra cost and stress.
