Can I enter Vietnam visa-free under the unilateral visa exemption, and how should I complete the arrival form?

TL;DR
If your nationality qualifies for Vietnam’s unilateral visa exemption, you can fly without a pre-arranged visa and select “Unilateral exemption” in the arrival form. A new visa can generally be requested with a future start date, but it must be activated by exiting and re-entering Vietnam.
When entering without a pre-arranged visa, select “Unilateral exemption” in the form; the system may automatically fill in the expected arrival date. Use this option only if you are eligible for Vietnam’s unilateral visa-exemption scheme.
If the form says the visa date cannot be later than the arrival date, check the entry basis and dates. For visa-exempt entry, choose “Unilateral exemption” rather than entering visa details or a visa number.
You can apply for a new visa in advance with a start date after your current permission ends. To activate the new visa, you will need to leave Vietnam and re-enter.
