Egyptian Museum Cairo vs Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) — which one is worth visiting?

Heat and fatigue. In late August 2026 a traveler recalled that last year in Cairo, by the time they had gone round all the museums, they arrived at the pyramids completely exhausted. That is an argument against packing too many museums and the pyramids into one hot day.

Tour price. In late August 2026 travelers wrote that they were going on a Cairo tour for $80 per person, including entry to the new museum. This is the price of one trip; it may differ between tour organizers.

How long to spend at GEM. In August 2026 a traveler said she stayed at a hotel in Cairo and visited the new museum two days in a row, because in one day you end up rushing. She alternated between the museum and the pyramids to avoid the tourist crowds. Other travelers spent five days in Cairo, after the hype around the museum's opening had died down, and saw the whole city in that time.

Early start. In June 2026 a traveler recalled last year's tour: the group was picked up from the hotel at 2 AM, reached Cairo by 8 AM, waited there for the guide until 9, and arrived at the museum by 10. In July 2026 other travelers said they were picked up at 3:30 AM and were among the very first to enter the museum in Cairo, having slept and had breakfast on the way.

The old museum. In June 2026 a traveler who had visited the old Egyptian Museum the previous year said the guide had taken the group past the queue straight to the pharaohs. But now, in his words, the pharaohs are no longer there, so he does not quite see the point of going to the old museum. The person asking also noted that much of the old museum's collection has already been moved out.

The Sphinx closed early. In June 2026 a traveler warned anyone booking a Cairo tour with the new museum: on her day the Sphinx area closed at 16:30, although she understood it should be open until 17:00. She did not know whether this was seasonal, temporary or just bad luck. The group made it to an oil shop and other souvenir stops but missed the Sphinx.
