Is there good snorkeling with fish in Dahab, and where should I go?

TL;DR
There are plenty of fish in Dahab — you just won't see them from random beaches. Head to specific snorkeling spots like the Happy Life area, Islands, Lighthouse, Blue Hole, or the Garb El Bint/Ras Abu Galum nature reserves.
For snorkeling-focused time at Ras Mohammed, a private car trip with stops at selected reef sites is preferable to a standard group itinerary. From Dahab, you still need to travel via Sharm el-Sheikh; it can be practical to combine it with arrival day and an overnight in Sharm, then reach the reserve at opening time before queues build up.
Someone asked whether to pick Sharm or Dahab, worried Dahab has no fish. The answer: fish are there, you just need to go to the right spots instead of random beaches.
Best snorkeling areas for mask-and-fins swimming are the Happy Life district, Islands, and Lighthouse, plus a trip to Blue Hole.
Canyon and El Garden spots are not good for snorkeling — they're better suited for diving.
Beyond regular beaches, it's worth visiting two nature reserves — Garb El Bint and Ras Abu Galum — which offer boat excursions.
Ras Abu Galum offers combined tours with jeeps, desert, canyons, and Bedouin villages — more about adventure than snorkeling.
At Garb El Bint you can join a boat shared with divers, and there's drift diving along the reef there.
No need to travel back to Sharm for a half-day yacht snorkeling trip — from Dahab you can take a boat excursion directly to Garb El Bint or Ras Abu Galum.
