TL;DR
Wind can be strong even on "closed" or sheltered bay beaches in Sharm el-Sheikh, causing sand in your face and discomfort. When it's calm, there's often a gasoline smell near shore from boats and yachts, and trash can accumulate in the water.
The Arabia district is generally windy, but Zahabia beach on the pier side is sheltered from wind by the Sunny hotel buildings — over 10 days, waves appeared only on the last morning (and were still swimmable), the rest of the days were nearly calm.
Even a beach marketed as "closed"/sheltered from wind can still be very windy — uncomfortable wind in the sea and around the hotel grounds.
The sea floor within a single bay is not uniform — the terrain and quality vary significantly from spot to spot, which is a separate issue from wind conditions on the beach itself.
Swimming in the lagoon area is not recommended — better to pick a different beach. Downside on calm days: a persistent gasoline smell from yachts and boats, and toward the end of the trip a lot of trash washed up in the sea, likely from boats.
In the nearby Red Sea area of Soma Bay, wind can get extreme too — one September day it was so strong you couldn't talk and sand got in your mouth, worth keeping in mind when timing your trip.
