TL;DR
During June-August the southeast trade winds hit Mahe, so water around 26°C (79°F) feels cool and waves/current are noticeable on southeast-facing beaches. For calmer, warmer water this season, head to beaches on the northwest side of the island.
Copolia and Mer Blanc beaches were liked, but Anse Major was disappointing: by late afternoon there were many boats and people, oil slicks on the water, and the water was murky and stirred up — not appealing for swimming or snorkeling.
One traveler reported warm water, manageable waves, and comfortable air temperature at a beach in early August.
A traveler asked for others' experience, noting that 26°C (79°F) water felt cold to enter (comparing it to the Black Sea), and got chilly when windy or cloudy despite being near the equator.
Eden Island's beach (man-made island) is unremarkable compared to other Mahe beaches, but convenient if you have a car. For September, the northwest coast is recommended over the east coast.
A beach visited in late July was rated the best on Mahe: great weather, slightly windy but fresh air, small waves. Nearby Anse Intendance beach was also good but had bigger waves.
