Best place to exchange US dollars to Sri Lankan rupees in Colombo: airport, bank, or city money changer?

A traveler reported that on 10 September the Colombo airport rate was 323.95 LKR per USD, with no difference between newer and older dollar notes in that instance.

Some travelers note that you may be asked to show a receipt proving you exchanged USD for rupees upon arrival at the airport, for later transactions or checks. It's worth keeping your exchange receipt just in case.

A common practical approach is to exchange a small amount at Bandaranaike Airport right after landing for a taxi, SIM card, and initial expenses. The airport rate is usually not the best in Sri Lanka, but the difference is manageable if you only change enough for the first 10,000–20,000 LKR.

If you want a better rate in Colombo, travelers usually check Fort and Pettah. There are many exchange counters close together, so it is easy to compare rates at several places before handing over your dollars.

Jewelry shops on Sea Street in Pettah often offer better exchange rates than the airport and sometimes better than major banks. Before exchanging, confirm the final amount you will receive and count the cash at the counter.

It is better to bring clean, newer USD notes, especially $50 and $100 bills, because they usually get a better rate than small denominations. Worn or older notes may be exchanged at a worse rate or refused altogether.
