Where to go in Sri Lanka during the rainy season if the southwest coast (Colombo area) has bad weather?

In early October 2026 a traveler shared a two-week summary: no rain in Colombo on 18–20 September; in Ella on 20–23 September hot and sunny mornings with an hour or so of evening rain; in Arugam Bay on 23–30 September one heavy downpour lasting about two hours; and another two-hour downpour on 30 September – 2 October. In October a participant told a hesitant traveler not to cancel: it does rain, but it does not ruin the trip.

In mid-September 2026 a participant wrote that humidity on the island is always around 80%, while rain varies. In his view, by the 20s of September the season has not started yet: it can be dry or already overcast, as in the shoulder season. At that moment the south and southwest were dry. At the same time other travelers were asking whether it really rains every day in Unawatuna, Colombo and Weligama, as the forecasts showed.

On diving, a participant wrote in August 2026 that it was off-season on this coast: good underwater visibility is unlikely and the sea is rough. At this time of year people dive on the east of the island. He still recommended checking the weather for the specific day.

Several participants in August 2026 were reassuring: rain in Sri Lanka is not a big problem if you have a raincoat. In their experience there is no constant rain even in the shoulder season — the monsoon showers pass over the island quickly. Compared with Vietnam, where one of them said the rain was harsh, here it is light; if your travel dates are fixed, they suggest simply buying a good raincoat.

One participant pointed out a quirk of the southwest: in his words, more millimetres of rain fall here in the season than in the summer off-season. This is one person's view, not a climate reference — check the forecast for your own dates before travelling.
