TL;DR
South and southwest coast (Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa) is best November–April, peaking in January–February. East coast (Arugam Bay) shines May–September. October is shoulder season everywhere.
December is not the season for Trincomalee — that's when the south and southwest are in high season. Galle and Ella are good picks in December, but Trincomalee is not.
The start of the south/southwest season in November covers Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, and Bentota, though weather is often unreliable then.
Late December and early January are great for Mirissa, Weligama, and Unawatuna, plus day trips to the central highlands. Arugam Bay is also viable during this period.
October is shoulder season: the east coast is winding down and the south hasn't opened yet. Weather is unpredictable — sunny or rainy. First-timers are better off avoiding October to get a fair impression of the island.
January is peak season on the south and southwest coast — expect crowds. For a quieter experience, head inland to the central highlands; the east coast is in low season in January.
Winter (November–April) is the best overall time to visit Sri Lanka: minimal rain, sunny skies, and warm temperatures. January and February are the standout months, especially coming from cold climates.
The east coast, including Arugam Bay, is in season until around September 20. After that, the season ends there. For the south and southwest, February is the top pick.
Early September in Hikkaduwa is a gamble — it's on the southwest coast where the season only starts in November. In September, the east coast is the better choice.
November is technically the start of the south coast season (Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, Mirissa), but in practice it's often overcast and unpredictable. Better to shift the trip to February, or August–September if targeting the east coast.
