Best time to swim in Bodrum — morning vs evening, and how to get a beach umbrella spot?

On Gumbet’s shallow beach, the sea felt almost Mediterranean-warm during the day, especially while swimming near the surface. The sand on the bottom is sun-warmed and the water is turquoise, making daytime a good option for a warm swim here.

At the lagoon beach, plenty of loungers were available at about 6:00am. Mountain shade reaches this beach after 3pm and it gets cooler, so for sun and swimming later in the day, switch to the larger wave beach, which stays sunny until around 7pm.

In mid-May, the sea may remain rough throughout a stay: one 10-day visit had no fully calm days, with waves constantly present. In those conditions, the sea is better for a quick dip than for proper swimming.

Two travelers who stayed until Oct 21 add detail: swam for up to 2 hours with no issue, water felt bracing on entry but comfortable after; subjectively no colder than 25°C. Daytime air averages 27-29°C (up to 32°C some days), mornings around 18°C, dropping to about 20°C by 10pm — a t-shirt is enough for evening seaside activities.

One guest observed that poolside loungers get claimed with towels even faster than beach spots: at 6am, when she headed to the sea, all poolside loungers were already reserved with towels left overnight (never cleared), while the beach still had noticeably more free spots.

After rain on the evening of July 25 (around 6:30pm), the sea had waves; no major trash was seen, but occasional wood chips or sawdust-like debris floated in the water.

One traveler notes the water warmed up noticeably in late July: on arrival July 22 it stayed cold all day until evening, but by month's end it had become much warmer — in their view, August looks like the best month for swimming this season.

During early July, waves consistently appeared in the bay after around 11am–12pm most days — one traveler noted being surprised waves could form inside a bay at all. This suggests swimming before midday is calmer.

One visitor swam from 9:30 to 11:30am and reported plenty of free sunbeds and few people in the water at that time; the sea was warm, clean and clear, with a sand-and-pebble beach.

In Aquarium Bay, the water felt about one degree warmer in the evening compared to Gumbet — so evening swim comfort varies by specific bay.

Travelers staying at Plaza Bodrum report the water was warm and pleasant for all 14 days of their stay; they note temperature depends not just on the bay overall but on the exact spot within it — swimming from a yacht in open water felt noticeably colder.

In mid-October it's warm enough during the day, but it's worth dressing warmer for the evening — evenings turn cool, and the sea itself is already cold by then, making long swims impractical.

At Salinas Beach, the sea can feel quite brisk in the morning and during the day; travelers described the water as fairly cold even in daylight hours.

By around 10:30 am, the beach can already be very hot, so it's more comfortable to swim and spend time by the sea earlier; later, many move to the pool or shaded areas.

At Old Beach, some travelers report swimming every evening without issues, so for that specific spot evening swims can be a perfectly workable option.

Evenings in Bodrum can feel noticeably cool and breezy, especially when there are waves. This makes evening swimming less appealing compared to calmer conditions earlier in the day.

Beach umbrella spots near the sea do exist, but by 8am they're nearly all taken. Arriving early is essential if you want shade. Poolside areas tend to be less crowded.

Sunset in Bodrum is around 8:30pm. After dark, the promenade stays lively but almost no one swims. The sea water is warm by evening, but swimming after sunset is uncommon.
