Can a travel eSIM in Istanbul be used for calls, messaging and SMS?

TL;DR

Most travel eSIMs in Istanbul are data-only: you can call and message through WhatsApp, Telegram and similar apps, but regular calls to phone numbers are usually unavailable. For SMS and cellular voice calls, choose an eSIM with a phone number or use your home operator’s roaming.

A standard travel eSIM provides full mobile internet access in Istanbul. Calls and messages in WhatsApp, Telegram and other apps work over data, but you normally cannot dial regular mobile or landline numbers with a data-only eSIM.

Data-only eSIM

If you need standard cellular calls, look for an eSIM plan that includes a phone number and voice minutes. These options are available but cost more than data-only eSIMs.

Voice eSIM with phone number

To keep receiving SMS and calls on your usual number, keep your home SIM active on roaming and use a separate eSIM for data. Cellular calls while roaming can be expensive.
